Currently he is professor at Professional Music School Artave at Santo Tirso, Portugal. Born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal, Rui first began is Double bass lessons at well renewed Artave music school with Professor Alexandre Samarjiev and continue is training at Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra Metropolitana with Vladimir Kouznetsov. Through the years as a student, he also worked with prominent professors like Rinat Ibraguimov, Duncan Mctier, Klauss Trumpf, Peter Pühn and many others.
He owns several prizes in several national and international competitions. It was awarded scholarships from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Música, Educação e Cultura Association. He played solo works with Académica Metropolitana Orchestra and Médio Ave Orchestra.
After his graduation he was appointed solo double bass of Norte Orquestra, Portugal. He also worked as invited solo double bass in well renowned orchestras such European Union Youth Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan orchestra and Atlantic Coast Orchestra which add an opportunity to work with several world class conductors and soloists such Bernard Haitink, Sir Colin Davis, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Paavo Järvy, Yakov Kreizberg, Jean Marc Burfin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Helene Grimaud, Mikhail Pletnev, Viktoria Mullova, Plácido Domingo, Fiorenza Cossotto, José Carreras and many others.
Rui had performed in several music festivals and in important venues such as Prom’s festival in the Royal Albert Hall (London), lucerne festival, Yehudi Menuhin festival (Gstaad), Ravena festival and Young European Classic in the Philharmonie (Berlin), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) Saint-Petersburg Philharmonia (Russia), among others.
Since 2005 he dedicated is carrier to pedagogy. He became professor of Artave and Conservatory of Music Centro de Cultura Musical at Santo Tirso, Portugal. He´s students won many national and international competitions and they are being appointed to major orchestras around all Europe.
Currently Rui appears as a soloist in recitals and with chamber music ensembles performances which often are broadcasted at national Radio and Television.
